The city of Durham is on the River Wear in the North East of England. Durham is a historical city, with a Norman castle and a cathedral dating back to 1093AD, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral is the final resting place of the 11th-century saint, Cuthbert. It is also where the remains of the Venerable Bede lie in repose. The marketplace and adjacent streets provide plenty to interest the avid shopper and there are over 630 listed buildings, including Elvet Bridge, St Giles Church, Gilesgate, and the Chorister School. Durham is a university city and boating is popular both among student rowers and the general public, who regularly hire the pleasure boats available. A regatta takes place in the town each year. Durham is ideally placed for touring; it is 18 miles south of Newcastle and close to the North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park. Enterprise Rent-A-Car is situated just over a mile from the city centre, on Darlington Road at Neville’s Cross. The distance is easily walkable; alternatively, take a bus from the station (Enterprise is on a busy route) or take advantage of Enterprise’s offer of a pick-up service.
